Stimulator flies are some of the best floating natural material flies ever created. When you use floatant with them, you can get them to hold up even the heaviest of nymphs, or fish them in fast moving current without worry of them getting sunk. The combination of deer hair, mixed with hackle makes this an amazing floater.
They aren't just great floating flies either, they can be some of the most effective flies as well. I would fish these a lot in the tiny streams and creeks up in Colorado, and the native trout out there would gobble these up so quickly.
The Stimulator was created to mimic an adult female stonefly depositing eggs on the top of the water. With that butt end hanging down, it mimics this perfectly. They are excellent stonefly representations, but they also represent a hopper, and even can fool trout in caddis hatches. These are very versatile.
While not easy to tie, they tend to be pretty durable. The whole thing is densely covered in hackle which helps to keep some of the fish teeth from penetrating to the thread or materials. While it's not quite as durable as maybe a foam fly, it still does pretty good, and can be fished many many times through multiple fish strikes. So to me, they are worth the tie, as you can get a lot of enjoyment out of just one of these.
Make sure you check out my sponsor Risen Fly. They have amazing deals on hooks and beads, but also sell some of the best fly rods Ive ever used, and at a price that is very reasonable. With the cost of fly fishing going up every year, it's refreshing to find great quality gear at prices we can all afford. Best off they are offering all of you a discount just for being my subscriber. So go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout for 15% off your first order with them.
Also dont forget to pick up one of my fly boxes. I have both magnetic backed and silicone backed, if these sell well I plan on getting more styles as well and maybe even bringing back the shirts that everyone loved years ago. Check out my amazon store front to pick up the boxes. - www.amazon.com/shops/McFlyAngler
